Hire a Drone Pilot for a Topographic Survey

A topographic survey hire on a marketplace is usually a request for surface context: a current orthomosaic, a digital surface, and contours or profiles the civil team can talk over. It is not, by default, a sealed topographic survey signed by a licensed professional land surveyor. If you need a PLS stamp, hire that professional and treat the drone package as supporting geospatial data.

This guide is for owners, GCs, civil designers, and site managers who want to hire a drone pilot for topographic mapping. It is nationwide marketplace hiring advice. It is not a promise that the operator is a licensed surveying firm.

What you are hiring for

Typical goals:

  • Pre-design existing-conditions context on a pad, quarry bench, or campus expansion
  • Earthwork conversation starters: high/low areas, haul paths, and drainage shape as of a flight date
  • Progress surfaces when dirt is moving and the last survey is weeks old
  • Orthomosaic plus DSM/DTM products a designer can overlay on the current civil set
  • Shared pictures for owners, earthwork bidders, and the engineer who will not walk every acre this week

Say which of those you need in the first message. “Need a topo” alone is ambiguous. Some buyers mean one-foot contours they can design from. Some mean a pretty hillshade for a planning meeting. Those are different flights, different ground control, and different liability.

What a useful deliverable looks like

Ask for:

  • Orthomosaic and a digital surface (DSM at minimum; DTM only if vegetation filtering is in scope)
  • Contours or profiles at an interval you and the designer actually use—not a decorative default
  • Coordinate reference system matching the design set, written on the files
  • Flight date, site name, and a short methods note (GSD, overlap, RTK/PPK or ground control, what was not surveyed)
  • Optional: point cloud or 3D tiles if the engineer wants to look around, not just down

Do not expect the marketplace pilot to certify boundaries, easements, or a sealed topographic survey unless they are working under a licensed surveyor’s scope. Photogrammetry from a drone is a mapping product. A PLS topographic survey is a licensed professional product. Mixing those words in a purchase order is how both sides argue after delivery.

If multiple firms will use the files, say so. Ask whether you get a GeoTIFF and a CAD-friendly contour set, or only a viewer link. Viewer-only is fine for a meeting. It is not fine if the civil tech needs breaklines in Civil 3D on Tuesday.

Accuracy talk without pretending you bought a stamp

Relative accuracy on a photogrammetry surface depends on flying height, GSD, overlap, control, and vegetation. Absolute accuracy depends on how the job is tied to the project control. Write the expectation in the job post: planning-grade context, construction-progress comparison, or “must match existing site control within X.” Then ask the pilot what they will not claim.

Tree canopy, standing water, stockpile toes, and active haul traffic all punch holes in a photo-only ground model. If the site is timbered or the question is true ground under brush, say so. LiDAR may be the right payload, still as geospatial data for the engineer—not a boundary survey.

Ground control or an RTK/PPK workflow belongs in the quote when the designer will measure from the surface. It is extra work. It is not a PLS license.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Part 107 current, and aircraft/payload fit for the acreage and the vegetation.
  • CRS and units they will deliver in, and whether they can match your control.
  • Whether GCPs, checkpoints, or only GNSS on the aircraft are included—and what that means for your use.
  • Turnaround for ortho, DSM, and contours.
  • File formats the civil team can open (GeoTIFF, LandXML, DXF, LAS/LAZ).
  • Insurance certificate naming your company if the GC or owner requires it.
  • Who owns the files after delivery.
  • Airspace and access: controlled airspace, active construction, and who escorts the crew.

Ask for one prior topographic or existing-conditions sample—ortho plus a surface or contour screenshot—not a sunset reel.

Scope tips that save a reshoot

Share the address or lat/long, approximate acreage, and a sketch of the extents. “The whole 40” and “the pad plus the ditch to the county road” are different maps. Mark stay-out zones, overhead lines, and stockpiles that must be included or excluded.

Tell the pilot if dirt will move between booking and flight. A surface flown after the cut started is not the existing-conditions set the designer thought they bought. Write the weather and access slip in the PO so a scrub does not become a week of silence.

If a licensed surveyor is already on the project, loop them in. They may want specific control, a different contour interval, or to keep sealed work in their own workflow while the drone fills the picture between surveys.

What this hire is not

This is not a licensed land surveying firm. It is not ALTA, boundary, easement, or floodplain work unless a licensed professional is in charge of that scope. It is not a hydrology study, a geotech report, or a construction stakeout. Keep the purchase order on topographic mapping products: ortho, surface, contours, methods note.

Marketing video, thermal roofs, and indoor inspections are separate hires. Add them only if you want them priced.

How to write the job post

Keep the marketplace listing short. City or site name and acreage. Deliverables: ortho, DSM, contours at a stated interval, CRS. Whether ground control exists. Deadline. Request Part 107 certificate number and one sample existing-conditions or topo-style product. That package attracts operators who already map dirt—and filters out reel-only flyers.

Practical notes

Morning flights often reduce heat shimmer on bare dirt. After rain, wet ground can help show ruts and can also delay the flight. If the site must stay active, ask for a plan that works around haul routes. Name files with site, date, and product type. And keep the language honest in the PO: drone topographic mapping data, not “this is the sealed topo,” unless a licensed surveyor is actually providing that stamp.
