Hire a LiDAR Drone Pilot for a Construction or Survey Job

Photo-only mapping is a strong tool on a bare pad. It is a weak tool the day the site is still in trees, the corridor is under canopy, or the pile has vegetation on the face. That is when you hire a LiDAR drone pilot.

You are not buying a more expensive movie. You are hiring an active laser scan so you can see ground and structure in places a camera cannot lock onto. The cloud, the classification, and the coordinate system are the product.

I fly commercially out of Springdale, Arkansas. Eight years of construction and survey-adjacent work has a simple split: if the ground is visible and the surface has texture, photogrammetry is often enough. If it isn't, stop asking a camera to do a ranging job.

When photo-only mapping is not enough

Photogrammetry builds a surface from overlapping photos. It needs ground you can see and features the software can match. Dense canopy, tall weeds, a thin transmission corridor, a ditch under trees, a dark featureless stockpile, or a site you have to fly in poor light — those are the usual failure modes.

LiDAR sends a pulse and measures range. Multiple returns can pick up canopy and, in many stands, enough ground to build a bare-earth surface. That is not a promise that every forest floor comes back clean. Closed, wet, leafy canopy still hides ground. Ask the operator what they expect on this cover, in this season, not what a brochure says about "penetration."

Typical asks that push you toward LiDAR:

  • A vegetated tract you need to grade or design before the clearing is done.
  • A utility, road, rail, or pipeline corridor where the feature sits under trees or along a fence line a nadir photo smears.
  • Stockpiles with vegetation, irregular faces, or a need to see the ground around the pile, not just the peak.
  • Sites where you already have a photo ortho and it keeps losing the ground.

If the pad is bare and you want a weekly picture of what moved, hire progress photography or a progress ortho. Don't pay for LiDAR because the word sounds like survey.

What you actually get

A point cloud you can classify

The raw deliverable is a point cloud, usually LAS or LAZ, in a coordinate system you name. Classification — ground, vegetation, building, noise — is what turns a cloud into a surface a civil set can use. Ask who classifies, and whether you are buying a raw cloud or a classified one. Those are different prices and different uses.

Bare earth and the things sitting on it

On a vegetated site, the product you likely want is a DTM (bare earth) plus a DSM (top of canopy and structures) if the trees matter. On a corridor, you may want the wires, the poles, the ditch, and the ground in the same file. Say that in the scope. "Fly LiDAR" is not a scope.

Stockpiles and earthwork context

A bare, well-shaped pile can often be measured from photos. Hire LiDAR when the pile is messy, vegetated, or sitting in weeds that would fool a photo surface. If a dirt contractor will be paid from the surface, you need control, checkpoints, and a surveyor in the conversation. Ask for accuracy as a method, not as a slogan. I will not quote a centimeter number here.

Corridors

Linear jobs are where LiDAR earns the mobilization. A camera grid over a long ditch line spends most of its time on trees. You still need a width, a height limit, and a statement of what must be in the cloud: ground, drainage, structures, utilities you are allowed to map.

What this is not

LiDAR is not a boundary survey because an aircraft flew. It is not a stamped topographic survey unless you hired a licensed surveyor for that stamp. It is not a substitute for an underground utility locate. It does not see through closed canopy on command.

It is also not the same bid as a progress photo package or a marketing flyover. If your superintendent wants a Thursday picture of the pad, hire that. If your PE wants ground under the trees along the south property line, hire LiDAR and say so.

How to hire

Write the scope like a survey task, even if you are not buying a stamp.

Operator checklist

  • Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Ask for the number.
  • Proof they have flown LiDAR, not only RGB mapping. Ask for a sample cloud and a sample control report from a similar site, names removed if needed.
  • Certificate of insurance. Many GCs ask for $1 million commercial general liability, additional insureds, and aviation / unmanned aircraft coverage. Use your risk team's minimums.
  • A payload they can name and a method for control: RTK/PPK, ground control, checkpoints. Method, not a marketing accuracy claim.
  • Airspace plan. Corridors cross towers, hospitals, and airports. Confirm who files LAANC or the ATC path. Need the law on LAANC? dronelaws.us.
  • Classification and delivery, not just a flight. Ask who processes and how fast.

Deliverable checklist

  • Classified LAS/LAZ in the project coordinate system (State Plane or the datum your civil set uses).
  • DTM and, if you asked for it, DSM.
  • A control and checkpoint report if this will support design or pay quantities.
  • A simple viewer file for the people who will never open a point cloud.
  • Optional: contours, breaklines, or a stockpile volume table if you scoped them.
  • Date, site name, scanner, and coordinate system on the packet.

Ask for turnaround in writing. A construction site can take a few days.

If you will design from the surface or pay a contractor from it, say that up front. Share existing control. If you only need a planning surface, say that too.

What to put in the RFP

  1. Site or corridor description, approximate acreage or length, and current cover (bare, grass, woods, season).
  2. Why photo-only is not enough, in one sentence.
  3. Deliverables: classified cloud, DTM/DSM, coordinate system, optional contours or volumes.
  4. Existing control, or a request for the operator's control method and checkpoints.
  5. Whether a licensed surveyor is in the loop for a stamp or a pay quantity.
  6. Part 107 proof, COI with additional insureds, and who files airspace.
  7. File drop and the date you need a usable surface.

Hire the ranging tool when the camera cannot see

A superintendent does not need LiDAR every Thursday. Hire a Part 107 LiDAR pilot for the vegetated tract, the corridor, or the pile a photo surface will lie about — and write the control and the files into the PO.
