Hire a Drone Pilot for Crop Scouting or NDVI

I have walked enough rows after a dry week to know the difference between a scouting map and a guess. The field looks fine from the road. From overhead, the thin stand, the wet corner, and the nitrogen strip are obvious.

You hire a drone pilot for crop scouting or NDVI when you need a georeferenced look at the canopy — stress, stand, vigor — without walking every acre before the growth stage moves on. I fly this commercially from Springdale, Arkansas. The job is a scouting product for the grower, the consultant, the co-op, or the farm manager. It is not a cinematic farm video.

What crop scouting and NDVI actually are

You are hiring a mapping flight over the field, not a highlight reel of the pivot. The aircraft flies a grid. Processing builds an ortho and, when the sensor supports it, vegetation-index layers such as NDVI. NDVI in plain English: it is a ratio that compares how the canopy reflects near-infrared light versus red light. Healthy, dense green canopy usually returns a higher value. Thin stand, bare soil, waterlogging, or late stress usually returns a lower one. The map shows relative differences across the field on that day. It is a scouting tool. It is not a prescription by itself.

Typical hires: a grower who wants a mid-season stress map before a fertilizer or irrigation decision; an ag consultant who needs a repeatable mosaic for several clients in the same window; a co-op or farm manager covering multiple fields when boots-on-the-ground cannot keep up.

Ask what the index is built from. A true multispectral camera captures separate bands, including near-infrared. RGB-only cameras can produce derived "greenness" products that look similar on a slide. They are not the same sensor. Say which one you want on the PO.

What you actually get

Georeferenced NDVI and false-color mosaics

Ask for a georeferenced GeoTIFF of the NDVI (or the index you ordered), plus a false-color composite if the sensor has NIR. Date, field name, and coordinate system on the file. Add a web image or PDF for people who will never open GIS. Without georeferencing, you cannot overlay the map on your boundaries.

A scouting map you can act on

The useful product shows where the canopy differs — thin spots, wet corners, nutrient or pest patterns — so you or your agronomist know where to walk next. Zone polygons help if you asked for them. Do not expect the pilot to write a fertilizer rate. That is agronomy.

Timing: growth stage and sky

Fly when the canopy tells you something. Early emergence for stand; mid-season for vigor and stress; late season only if the question is still open. Cloud cover, haze, and a wet canopy change how the sensor reads. Write a cloud-free preference and a weather slip. Wind above the aircraft limit cancels a clean grid; the operator proposes the next slot before the stage moves past the decision.

Altitude and GSD matter. Lower altitude (finer GSD) resolves smaller patches; higher altitude covers acres faster. Ask what GSD they plan and whether it matches the feature size you care about. One flight at the right stage beats three that miss it. Season-long programs work when you lock the same sensor, processing, and field names.

What this is not

Do not hire crop scouting NDVI if what you want is a variable-rate prescription without an agronomist. The map is input. The rate file is someone else's license and liability.

Do not hire this flight for pesticide or fertilizer application by drone. Spray and granular work need separate aircraft, permits, and often Part 137 or state pesticide applicator rules. Scouting is sensing. Application is a different hire.

Do not hire this if you mainly want a cinematic farm video. Stills and short B-roll can be an add-on. They are not the NDVI product. Part 107 still applies. So does the COI your farm, co-op, or consultant risk team asks for on any sub.

How to hire

Write the scope like a scouting operation, not like "come fly the soybeans."

Operator checklist

  • Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Commercial flight in the U.S. requires it. Ask for the certificate number.
  • Certificate of insurance. Many farms and co-ops ask for $1 million CGL, additional insureds, plus aviation coverage. Use your risk team's minimums.
  • Airspace plan. Controlled airspace means LAANC or an ATC path before takeoff. Confirm the operator files it. Need the law on Part 107 and airspace? dronelaws.us.
  • Sensor type in writing: true multispectral (list the bands) versus RGB-derived index. Ask for a sample NDVI mosaic from a prior ag job.
  • GSD / altitude plan that matches the feature size you care about.
  • Ag mapping experience, not only stills of barns. Ask for a prior field packet with date, field name, and index legend.

Deliverable checklist

  • Georeferenced NDVI (or agreed index) GeoTIFF, dated, named with field and date.
  • False-color or RGB ortho if ordered, same coordinate system as your boundaries.
  • Optional zone shapefile or hotspot list for walk-behind scouting.
  • Simple PDF or web preview for the grower who will not open GIS.
  • Legend: relative canopy response on that flight — not a diagnosis.
  • Turnaround in writing. A common window is 24 to 72 hours from wheels-down.
  • Weather slip: next cloud-free slot if the first day fails.
  • Who owns the files, and whether you can share them with the grower, the co-op, and the agronomist.

The field, the stage, and the sky

The weakest part of an NDVI job is almost never the grid. It is flying the wrong day or the wrong sensor for the question. Tell the operator the crop, the growth stage, the decision you need, and whether irrigation or a spray is planned soon. Share field boundaries. Mark pivots, power lines, and livestock. Get gate and contact for flight day.

If you use a consultant's platform, say which export they need. If not, GeoTIFF plus a PDF is enough. Do not ask for a prescription map from a pilot who is not your agronomist.

What to put in the email

Subject: Crop scouting / NDVI drone flight, [farm or field], growth stage [stage], target date [date].

Body: Part 107 required. Fields (names and acres). Crop and stage. Multispectral NDVI [or RGB-derived — specify]. Georeferenced GeoTIFF, false-color if available, PDF preview. GSD / altitude. Share boundary files. Cloud-free preference and weather slip. COI if we ask. Send certificate number and a sample NDVI packet. Turnaround from wheels-down.

Keep it short. The pilot who answers with sensor type, GSD, and a real weather plan is the one you want.
